For Navy's newest carrier Gerald R. Ford, a noteworthy change of command

Former first daughter Susan Ford Bales capped an emotional 48 hours at Newport News Shipbuilding Friday, bidding a tearful farewell to the outgoing captain of the aircraft carrier bearing her father's name. At a change of command ceremony, she broke down repeatedly in describing her admiration for Capt. John F. Meier, the first commander of the Gerald R. Ford. "Now I have to say goodbye to Captain Meier," she said haltingly. "I knew this day would come. I knew that we would have to transfer command. I have really struggled to describe how much Captain Meier has meant to me." Meier commanded the Navy's first-in-class aircraft carrier for 33 months.
